Waste-free Lunch Gear for Those in Need - How You Can Help

Summer is nearly over and many of us in the office are signing our kids up for their first year of school. Not surprisingly, but sad nonetheless, many of our school supply lists included optional donations of items like back packs, lunch bags and water bottles for children in need.

It really got us talking - with so many affordable waste-free lunch items in our Summer Sale, why not pick up an extra lunch bag or set of utensils for our kids' classmates? We have recycled cotton lunch bags as low as $2.25 and sets of reusable sporks for $4.95. These are durable, sustainable waste-free lunch items made to last all school year while taking it easy on the wallet.

We encourage our customers to consider adding an extra lunch bag, spork, or set of napkins to their back-to-school purchases this year, making waste-free lunch options available to all kids. In addition, we're looking for suggestions of classes and schools in need of waste-free lunch gear. Visit our  leave a comment on this blog or visit our Facebook page & tell us about a class or school that could benefit from a $500 lunch gear donation.

We'll consider your suggestions over the week end and pick a winning school or class early next week. We'll post about the recipient of our donation on our Facebook page.

Giving back is part of what we do - to date, we've donated more than $200,000 to like-minded non-profits. Click here to check out just a handful of other organizations and schools we've donated to over the years.

My son's school would love that lunch gear! School 12, James P.B. Duffy in Rochester, NY. Everyone there, from the principal and staff to the teachers and PTA, gives everything they've got not only to make the school a good one, but to enrich the students' lives. They have a community garden and get visits from one of the local CSAs to teach them about farming, eating local, and eating healthfully. The student body is largely made up of inner-city kids, with a pretty high poverty rate, so waste-free lunch goodies would be very much appreciated. Thanks so much for the giveaway!

Thanks.

The school I have been at for 10 years could truly use this! Loughman Oaks Elementary is a title one school. Over 70% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. One of our front office ladies, affectionately known as "Momma Gail," is pur parent liason. She has spent years thrifting and rounding up donations to help the parents in our community keep their children clothed, fed, and educated. I can only imagine how excited Gail would be to have beautiful new lunch supplies to pass out to families in need!

My school, James Graham Elementary, Newark, CA. could greatly benefit from the $500 donation toward waste free lunch gear. Last year our school’s focus was on ways to Be Green at school. The 5th/6th grade students, from the“Graham Green Team” visited classrooms promoting ways to reduce, reuse and recycle at school. They also supported our goal to promote a waste free lunch program, including food scrap recycling in the cafeteria and paper reuse/ recycling in the classroom. Our students in grades K-6th were excited to participate in the projects. Students loved to tell me ways they were going green; some would hold up a reusable bottle, or tell me they brought a reusable bag for lunch. Or they just might say “Hi Mrs. Paxton, Go GREEN”! I am very proud of our young students and their concern for the environment. However, many of our Title 1 families and other low income families can not afford to purchase items that would make “going green” easier. Having $500 to spend on waste free lunch items could make a big difference at our school. Many reusable bottles or lunch bags could be given to our most needy kids! Wow, what a great way to kick start the new school year. Thank you for the opportunity to apply for these funds.

you guys are right .. but i have to ask something!

This is a great campaign for our environment. Its true that lunch wastes produce a heap of garbage each day but if every child in this world can cooperate to your campaign, an amount of one day waste will be reduce drastically.
